A Whole Story

August 29, 2012 by The Squishy Monster

It’s been at least a year in coming…signs plastered in a vacant lot that told of a Whole Foods finally coming into town, brewing excitement for me comparable to my girlfriends reactions when it was announced that high end couture shops would be opening up at the mall.  I couldn’t have cared less about the latter but the former?  I had it written down in my planner, had a plan of attack, and knew just what I wanted before I even went.

To me, food isn’t just about nourishment.  It extends beyond survival.  It’s the pleasure of watching your fork sink into a freshly baked pie and the gooey cherries oozing out.  It’s about the crust that cracks from an artisanal loaf, just waiting to be slathered with butter and jam.  It’s about the abundance of colorful produce that gleam and glisten, trundled in baskets, begging to be taken home with you for supper or those thick slabs of meat that you can just imagine grilling over an open flame, sputtering in its own juices in its special seductive way.

Cute little babies.  I love Tomatoes.  I used to eat a Tomato Sandwich 3 days out of a week and never tire of them.

I’ve been on a huge nut kick lately and have practically been hoarding Almonds & Walnuts.

Fire Cracker Shrimp

These were so very tender.

Wild Caught Shrimp off the coast of NC

These look like stained glass to me ;)

Lunch: herbed Bulgar, Carrots, Wild Arugula, Broccolini, Summer Squash, Sunflower Sprouts, Baby Kale, Roasted Tomatoes, Grilled Tofu, Peanuts, Scallions, and Spicy Harissa.

XOXO (from a little baby food heaven),

Your Squishy Monster ^.~

I too would be over the moon if a Whole Foods opened here! We do have a “Whole Foods” but it is totally unaffiliated with the chain. It’s a tiny mom & pop health food store where we get or local eggs, coconut oil, raw honey, etc, but I would love to have REAL Whole Foods here. Your pics gave me such envy. :) Those “stained glass” tuna pieces look like heaven!

I was laughing so hard about your plan of attack…lol!! Too funny ;) After seeing your pictures I would LOVE a whole foods (and would be like you, more excited for that than a clothes store) but, we don’t have them here in MI. At least that I know of. Just like Farmer’s markets, not nearby. Gladly though, I have my own garden and it’s making me very happy right now. Tomatoes daily, canning pickles and soon sweet corn…yum!! Have a great weekend Angie :)

We had two Whole Foods stores in Raleigh, 3 Trader Joe’s, an EarthFare, and a Fresh Market. There’s a Trader Joe’s near here and and EarthFare and Fresh Market…now that the Whole Foods is open, the options are complete. :) I am so excited!
