Christmas Cookies
I went to what I thought was an appointment at the hospital yesterday (just a check up) but evidently, I was 2 weeks early, haha. What can I say, it’s been another hectic week and the pages on my planner got stuck together (which will teach me a lesson about carrying around a large quantity of candy in my purse).
There’s nothing quite like visiting a hospital to make your realize how lucky you are. Of course, me being me, I got lost and wound up circling the entire premise and scaling the stairs as if it were a new aerobics exercise. So many lost faces, stifled children, and paper cuts.
During my senior year in high school, I was convinced that becoming a registered nurse was my intended path. To explore this avenue, I interned at the local hospital. Enriching, inspiring, incredible were all words that floated in my head as I headed in for my first day. What I didn’t consider was the fact that I was placed in the Ob/Gyn, Neonatal and Labor and Delivery units. Needless to say, my very first day consisted of a vaginal irrigation, witnessing a still born birth, and inspecting a fetus. I went home and cried that day, not even chocolate cake could provide any solace. So many people are sick, suffering, alone…lonely.
So I’m on a loop here, but I feel so blessed. Lucky. Thankful …for all my limbs, food in the fridge, and the ability to sleep in my own bed (and so much more) but I just wanted to share that with y’all.
I hope that some of you are continuing with Random Acts of Christmas. How about sharing these festive cookies?
- 3 c unbleached flour*
- 2 ts baking powder
- ¼ ts fine salt
- 1 ts cinnamon
- ½ ts freshly ground nutmeg
- 2 sticks softened unsalted butter
- ½ c sugar
- ½ c brown sugar
- 2 ts vanilla
- 2 room temperature eggs
- 1 c powdered sugar
- 1-2 tb milk
- Splash of vanilla
- Food color
- In your first bowl, sift together all your dry ingredients: flour, baking powder, salt, spices.
- In your second bowl, cream together your butter and sugars for at least 5 minutes (please use soft, room temperature butter).
- Tip in your vanilla and one egg at a time. Mix well.
- In three separate additions, combine your wet and dry together, being mindful not to over beat.
- Roughly form your dough into a flat circular shape, wrap with plastic and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
- Roll out your dough to about ¼” thickness (lightly flour your hands, roller, and cookie cutters). I like to roll and cut directly on my plastic wrap.
- Dip your cutters in a bit of flour between each cut and lay them on an ungreased cookie sheet.
- Bake at 350 for about 8-10 minutes. Cool immediately on cookie racks.
- To make the icing, whisk together your powdered sugar, milk and color. (Tailor to how thick or loose you like your icing).
Lucky,
Love and Cookies,
Your Squishy Monster ^.~

Agree, we all have so much to be thankful for, + it’s even more prevalent in our thoughts this time of year, which is wonderful. =) And these cookies? totally my type of sweet – yum!
cookie party! =)
These look good! Nothing beats a chocolate chip cookie though
=)
Yum. Great looking cookies! What an awful internship experience! I can relate to it a little bit. We have ‘work experience’ in Australia, in 10th Grade. I spent a week at the local vet, and howled every day. Witnessed cats and dogs being put down, a dog that had been hit by a car and lots of other awful stuff. I don’t think I have a very strong constitution! Needless to say I didn’t pursue the vet dream…
I give anyone in the medical field great credit for being able to withstand such sadness every day.
We have so much to be thankful for. Your cookies are so delicious! I keep putting in for an email follow and am still not receiving you new posts. I absolutely love this recipe!
I hope you don’t mind if I reblog your link on my reblog page?

Dear Angie.in 1963 before my first cataract surgery Late 1963 I can still remember it though the memories are not as clear any more, lol I was in the hospital I was born in at age three and a half with severe flu. It was treated then I had surgery.I was there a month and one week.It seemed to be an eternity. Open racism and open discrimination toward any one with a disability was well common then. I have several relatives in medicine( most are leaving it now) I have dated some in medicine including some Lady doctors.( One she loved the term LOVELY DOCTOR.I can imagine how you felt and what you experienced working in hospital.
I meet so many former DOCTORS AND NURSES in the day to day business world. For several reasons they decided to leave.I could tell you some SAD horror stories.Angie health LIFE is a wonder and a blessing. More, MANY do not have it in these times.I know many nurses NOW with bad health, etc , like my late great sister Jean had ..
Angie LOVELY CHRISTMAS cookie recipe. Thanks for sharing your experiences and heart here.
God bless you.
Love.
xoxoxo.
Les.
PS.
Angie. I will be happy to take some of that candy if it is weighing down your purse,Lol!! I love candy, though I try to eat more natural and sugar free. When I have to have tests, etc at my docs ( I have been blessed to be DECADES LONG patient at internist and opthalmologist’s office. I get some sugar free candy before I leave.
Thanks for stopping by, Les =)
yum! I wish people gave me candy before I left a room, lol.
Angie…there is nothing like a trip to the hospital to put things in perspective. I feel so fortunate to…for the little things that make all the difference in my life. Your Christmas cookies are just beautiful! : )
So true. Thank you, Anne!
Absolutely adorable XMass cookies. Love the candy cane. I always find cookies to be challenging and there is no way am decorating so beautifully!:)
I think I’ll leave some out for Santa =)
These are the cutest little things! I need to get started on my Christmas baking ASAP! I am thankful for all of those things too
Hi Angie, lovely and cute Christmas cookies. I don’t mind to have half a dozen, please.:)
It’s never easy to work in hospital, very tough life and irregulars hours. I was an ex-nurse, 2 years in the ward and 5 years in operating theater mostly on orthopedic, A & E cases. I love my job but in the end I decide to quit to spent more time with my daughter, now working 9am to 5pm job. And I got more time to play in the kitchen aka my playground.
i couldn’t agree more… only visits to the hospital puts life in perspective, so important to be grateful every single day. Love those cookies!
Thank you =)
Very nice, I can’t blame ya, I would’ve done the same thing =)
Can’t wait to see what ya come up with =)
I want to encourage yourself to continue your great posts, have a nice day!
I can never heard in a hospital because I wouldn’t have the strength to face sick people day in and day out. Bless those who do it every day though – they’re amazing.
Yes, Angie! We are all very lucky.
I do plan to enroll in medical school when I get back to the states.
I’ve always been interested in the medical field and in high school I volunteered as well at my local hospital.
It had very tough days but some great ones.
Then when I completed my clinicals, at a nursing home, for my nursing assistants’, I cried a lot of those days too.
I have my degree in Medical Office Management now but I know I want to pursue more.
It’s wonderful to be grateful for what you have and to remember that, especially this time of year. Your cookies are decorated so nicely and neatly!
let’s Go!
Too funny on the planner! But the cookies look great!
You are aelcome Angie. Have a LOVELY day! Featuring a video of you on my blog for a few days!

Love.
Les.
I have totally gotten lost in a hospital before. I think they are all confusing! On another note, who doesn’t love a good Christmas cookie!
haha what a coincidence that I also posted a recipe using spelt flour on the blog! I like using that in place of normal flour in most recipes because it works almost jsut as well but is healthier and makes me feel slightly less guilty hehe. merry xmas!
yummmmmmeh!!!!!!!!! i wanna try!!! xO!

those are some super adorable christmas cookies! love them!
Thanks guys!
Just don’t get blood taken from you by the nurse as I had to before I requested and got the candy Lol.
Beautiful cookies! I feel the same as you – I take so many things for granted and its easy to forget you are until you see a sadder side of things! I feel very blessed to be living in a peaceful time without war, food in my fridge and full use of my body! Very lucky indeed xx
I just watched a documentary on the great depression and it reaaaally put things into perspective.
We definitely have lots to be thankful for! I love the sound and look of these cookies but my all time favourite is peanut butter cookies hehe
Yum!
Thanks for sharing! I really enjoyed reading this post… And these cookies? Beautiful treats for a beautiful blog!
