“Love Teeth” …my butt!

I got my wisdom tooth pulled this morning (사랑니 — Sah-lahng-ni in Korean meaning “Love Teeth) and was administered two shots but prescribed no meds after   I’m 27, by the way and the dr. cracked a joke about me being a late bloomer, but having been proceeded by no laughing gas either, I didn’t find it too funny :/

I’ve since been self medicating with food and groggily reaching for patriotically striped Tylenol that is laughing at me (laughing at me, I say!) so, there’s really nothing loving or lovely about it. I would say that I posses a pretty high tolerance for pain but it’s completely unsatisfactory to have to struggle chewing and altogether consuming food. It’s some sort of bizarre and unusual punishment. My saving grace through it all has been my BFF who dropped me off, picked me up and stayed with me an entire 16 hour day…through my comatose slumber, grumbles and all.  In defiance to fair warnings against spicy foods, by the time the extraction was done, I was ravenous and couldn’t bat off an intense craving for Indian and so we braved the copper tins, neatly lined up and stuffed with beautiful and creamy spiced concoctions.  Despite my “inebriation,” just the lovely swirl of smells could’ve satiated me.  It’s been too long since I’ve held a decent biryani in my mouth and it made the mornings grueling endeavor almost worthwhile.

I had two servings of biryani and dhal with a scoop of katchumber salad, tandoori chicken, curry, gobi korma, chili fish and chicken saag here and there for good measure.

We spent the latter part of the night sprawled out, stuffing ourselves with junk food, taking in the rubbish on t.v. which reminded me again of why I refuse to watch it (that is, with the exception of The Walking Dead, of course!)

Tomorrow will be a day dedicated to steaming congee, polenta, and mousse (not the worst sentence in the world) and a thorough search for a good whiskey….and ice cream, lots and lots of ice cream.

Despite feeling like I could hear my heart beating in my cheek, (the tannins from a black tea bag really helped with my bleeding), I realized through hazy eyes, that I am incredibly blessed to have such wonderful people in my life.  To feel loved is the best medicine, I think.  Mama even brought me …

{Hachiya}

Alluring in its pulpy, tear drop shape, my friend exclaimed, “looks like a strawberry and tomato got together, huh?”  It’s wrapped in a thin, coral skin and when exposed, has sweet and supple meat that reminds me of candy sweet plums but it’s really hard to say because to me, it’s my childhood favorite that tastes, well, like a persimmon….random tidbit, it’s actually considered a berry, go figure.

“Treasure,” I don’t know how I could’ve stumbled through the day without you–thank you!!!

We will be returning to the regularly scheduled program soon.

Love,

Your dazed and confused Squishy Monster ^.~

You poor girl! Hope it feels better very soon. Just take it easy on that spot; you don’t want to loose the little clot that is plugging the hole. If you do, it is called a dry socket and that is not a good thing. Get better soon!

  • Veronica says:

Poor Squish! You silly girl, you should have not been chewing at all. Didn’t they do anything right? They should have given you a prescription pain killer & told you liquids only. I survived on ice cream the whole week after my wisdom teeth were extracted and I finally got so desperate for real food I blended up refried beens with cheese and salsa and drank it with a straw. lol. I didn’t need pain meds even with all four out at once, and I bet you only need them b/c you insisted on chewing. Bad Squishy! Be a good girl and eat your ice cream. (never thought I’d say that in a million years.)

I’m so sorry to hear about your teeth. I’ve somehow managed to keep mine and dread that someone is someday going to make me pull them!

  • Morphine Man says:

my dentist forgot to remove some of the teeth shards …I got to pull em out with tweezers months later…it was awesome!

  • Angie@Angie's Recipes says:

WHAAA!? No meds!!! When I got mine out it was vicodin all day and all night! I mean mine hadn’t grown in yet so they had to like cut into my gums but…well…regardless I won’t bore you with that gross bloody tale.

Angie. I hope you feel better soon. I had mine out in 1985 and .Some do not til age thirty so his late bloomer comment was weird and inappropriate as he totally was too.Dear Angie. I respectfully suggest that you NEVER EVER! return to him again? He is unprofessional and well , it is the Christmas season so I will be nice and not call him a QUACK! as I want to. He reminds me of the QUACK that pulled SEVERAL teeth in my LATE GREAT DADS mouth, Dad had health issues, was on in years. We reported that dentist and we ALL were very closely involved when ever Dd SAW DOC , ETC.
I am blessed to know MANY fine medical professionals. Angie HE SHOULD have given you tylenol with codine as I had. I only had to take 2 of them. I also had antibiotic at the time as was then required of any one that had rheumatic fever as a child as I did.He should have told you o s use heat for 24 hours then ice packs to reduce swelling and help manage pain. He should have given you instructions Angie WRITTEN. The DENTIST DADS QUACK LOST HIS license.

Any good university hospital( Like Loyola university hospital in Maywood can refer you to a quilified, hopefully, kind, gentle dentist in future.

The food looks great! What a wonderful friend to stay with you like that Angie. TOO MUCH PAIN is not good for blood pressure levels. The following comment may be sexist, sorry I feel ALL women should be GENLTY dealt with no matter what the procedure, etc Angie.

Awww.. I had my wisdom teeth pulled, but I’m not sure how old I was. The worse thing I did was rinse my mouth with Scope which didn’t allow the blood to clot, which caused jaw/bone pain. OUCH! You seem to be enjoying a lot of Indian food.

  • Lester. says:

My dentist took over from the other two fine dentists in the office.

I hope you can get some rest and feel better soon. I HOPE he used stitches. Sorry encompitent medical people just well anger me Angie.

    Take care.

    Love.

    Les

    Thank you so much, Uru!!!

  • The Squishy Monster says:

I couldn’t resist…the only hang up for me, is that no meds were offered for post extraction but I suppose it’s the trade off for getting work done at a free clinic :/

  • The Squishy Monster says:

Puts a smile on my face to see you here!!! Thank you so much—I hope you’ve been well!

  • ACurvyWoman says:

I had my wisdom teeth removed on four separate occasions but I only remember two for them being painful experiences. I always dread going to the dentist and now I take painkillers as soon as I arrive for my appointment! Get well soon

  • Morphine Man says:

    true story =)

  • yummychunklet says:

Feel better soon! That tooth cartoon is cute.

  • grace says:

you poor thing! having wisdom teeth extracted is terrible, it was one of the worst experiences of my life! hang in there.

  • Lester says:

That’s great news Angie.Careful of chewing especially on the side of the extraction.Oral surgeons are much better at wisdom tooth extractions than general dentists. A GOOD dentist will always refer you to an oral surgeon Angie.soon laser may replace the dreaded drill for many dental procedures.Take care and A M A P enjoy your week end.

    Love.

    Les.

  • Janet@FCTC says:

Ouch!! No meds?! What a loony doctor. I’d have been protesting quite loudly.

  • amy donovan (@amy_donovan) says:

I just got my wisdom teeth out a few years ago, so I feel for you! Sounds like you had some wonderful people taking care of you, which makes all the difference. Hope you’re feeling tons better by now!

  • The Squishy Monster says:

idk what I’d do without ’em!

  • Simply Sweet Justice says:

I hope you are feeling better. What’s your new favorite ice cream flavor??

  • The Squishy Monster says:

is it fatty to say all of them?

  • thyme (sarah) says:

I didn’t have mine out until my early 30’s! Probably wouldn’t recommend waiting that long as they were HUGE. I couldn’t believe how big the roots were. You definitely should have had pain killers but I hope everything healed up well.

  • Nami | Just One Cookbook says:

When I was studying abroad in the US, I had to pull 4 wisdom teeth out during my summer vacation in Japan (because my insurance didn’t cover dental in the US). That was the horrible week with humongous cheek. I didn’t get to eat nothing but soup. I hope you will feel better soon, Angie!

  • The Squishy Monster says:

What a way to spend your vacation :/ I bet you and soup got as acquainted as me and ice cream =)

  • The Squishy Monster says:

One of my friends actually kept hers and made them into a necklace—cool but morbid, huh?

  • Amelia says:

Hi Angie, sorry to hear that you had your love teeth extracted. Before extract out, it must be painful and swollen?

Anyway your biryani look delicious, one of my favourite too. The persimmon is my favourite fruit, I just posted persimmon cheesecake, delicious and sinful. LOL

    Have a fabulous week ahead.

  • Evelyne@cheapethniceatz says:

Oh boy, sorry you had to go through that. I had all 4 pulled out at a very young age…like 16 or 17. I had an anxiety attack in the chair and apparently the surgeons are used to it cause I got a sedative shot in the arm (they keep a needle on their lap for this type of situation). It will heal fast at least. Squishy persimmonss are a perfect treat for now.

  • The Squishy Monster says:

Oh no! :/ Honestly, no one really told me anything and not until the night before did it even occur to me to see if I could arrange a ride…silly me.

  • The Squishy Monster says:

I wasn’t feeling well for the first 2 or 3 days but today, I could run a marathon, lol. Hope you do too, Amelia!
