Cheap Date

November 2, 2012 by The Squishy Monster

(I promise I’m not talking about you) ;)

My friend recently challenged me to orchestrate an entire day of fun/food for little or no money.  At the end of  it, the grand total came to right under $30 for 2 meals and 2 hours perusing through our local museum for 2 people the entire day.

Here’s what the day looked like:

Counter clockwise: Calamari Fritti, Spin Dip, Buffalo Wings, Mussels fra diavolo, Chicken Parm Sliders, and Margherita Pizza all for $2-$5.  A great tip to utilize is scoping out your local happy hours.

$.35/Oysters…it pays to call around to dig up current specials at various restaurants.  The internet is always a useful tool at your disposal and specials are often listed on websites.

Another great tip is to scour Groupon, Living Social, Entertainment Books and the like.

I used a local city search engine to find that our local Museum is free on Tuesdays.  (My recent trip to the International Festival was also free).

Wishing you delicious (and creepy) weekend fun!

Love,

Your Squishy Monster ^.~

p.s., Don’t forget about Suzie’s Bake Sale that is being orchestrated by my amazing friend at Vernonica’s Cornucopia!

What a great challenge. You did so well. That’s a wonderful day out with a lot to eat with great variety for very little. It’s amazing how much you can save if you take the time to do some research xx

  3. I love this idea! I’ve noticed that more and more I keep just upping the amount I spend on things when looking for fun. A total trap! Good fun can be done on the cheap.

I hope you’re having a fabulous weekend, Amelia! It’s spookier in person…museums always give me goosebumps…being surrounded by all the relics that have been around for longer than I’ve been alive–if they could only talk…

  14. What a fun post! Great ideas!

  15. Suzie says:

Wow! You did excellent for an all day trip and 2 meals. I can see hitting happy hour did help. All the food sounds good. Have you seen the new show (I forget the name of it) the guy has to find 3 meals and a snack in 24 hours for under $24 in a new city each week? It’s pretty neat but, you would have to research ahead of time. Thanks for posting about the fundraiser! xoxo

  16. Wow you saw some pretty awesome things for $30 bucks my friend :)
A great yet freaky day is the best!
